Research Interests

Physical chemistry of interfacial phenomena
:Our main focus is to research physical chemistry of interfacial phenomena with linear and nonlinear optical method. Using Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) and Sum Frequency Generation (SFG), we study on the molecular structure and dynamic processes on both smooth and rough surfaces, especially micro-particla interfaces. Second-order nonlinear optical methods has been developed since early 1980's. With their sub-monolayer sensitivity and sueface specificity, SHG and SFG allow us to study the spectroscopy and dynamics of interfaces at detailed molecular level. The discovery of SHG and SFG enhancement from micro-partical interfaces in 1996 has made great progresses on colloidal surfaces studies, which are ubiquitous in biological, environmental, and chemical industrial and medicinal application systems.

Spectroscopy and ultrafast dynamics at interfaces and in solution: With the SHG and SFG, we study structural and dynamic properties at various interfaces with molecular detail. SFG is used to study chiral molecules in the solution phase to understand their optical properties, to identify their energy state, and to understand detail interactions between chiral molecules and their environment.

Molecule dynamics in the solution and gaseous phases: We are interesting in the elemantry reaction process in the solution and gaseous phases. Using complementary technoiques of time-resolved spectroscopy, such as transient absorption, fluorescence depletion, and mass spectroscopy methods, we study inter- and intra- molecular dynamic processes, such as energy tranfer, charge tranfer, molecular dissociation, solvent effects, etc in the gaseous and solution phases.
